Why Should We Give?
Giving is an act of worship.
It is an outward expression of the inward commitment we have made to put God first in every area of our lives. When we give, we are identifying with the heart of God, in that we are demonstrating His generous character. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, He gave…” Christians should be the most generous people (2 Corinthians 9:6-15) because of what God has done for us!
“Just as you excel in everything…in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness; see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7 NIV
There are two forms of financial giving based on Scripture: tithes and offerings.
Tithing is giving God the first ten percent of our income (Leviticus 27:30). His design for the tithe is that it be given to our local church (Malachi 3:10).
There are times when God will move on our heart to give above and beyond our tithe. This is called an offering. Offerings can be given to specific direction (ie: missions, projects, etc.).
