The Holy Spirit || Part 9, Day 2

Acts‬ 2‬:1‬-4‬ NKJV‬‬

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts‬ 10‬:44‬-48‬ NKJV‬‬

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Acts‬ 19‬:1‬-7‬ NKJV‬‬

And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.

There are tongues of praise, worship, and thanksgiving.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NLT) “For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the Spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the Spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.”

Colossians 3:16 “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.”

Church the Bible says that when you give thanks in the Spirit, you give thanks well. When you sing in the Spirit, you sing well. When you worship and praise in the Spirit, you praise and worship well. These are the spiritual songs that the Bible speaks of in the book of Colossians. Spiritual song does not mean it’s a Christian song. Spiritual songs are songs flowing from the gifts of the Spirit.

But if all we did was get up here and sing and praise and worship in tongues, how many of you know that would not edify the church. If we got up here and worshiped in the Spirit, and then interpreted it, it would edify the church.

There are times when we have this congregation lift their hands and begin to sing and worship in the Spirit. Now, if all we did was sing and worship in the Spirit and never gave an interpretation, people would say you were out of your mind. Therefore, we do both here at ALC. We sing with our understanding, and we sing in the Spirit.

Colossians 3:16 tells us that we are to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. The word used in the Greek for spiritual songs doesn’t mean songs that are spiritual in nature. It’s doesn’t mean songs that are Christian in nature. In other words, it’s not talking about singing the latest song off of a Christian radio station.

The Greek word used here in the Bible is translated the majority of the times as Divine Spirit. In other words, songs that speak to the inner life of a human being. The Bible instructs us to sing spiritual songs or songs that are sung in the Spirit. There are times when we can hear a rhythm, but we have no words. We begin to sing in our spiritual language, in tongues to the rhythm and we can discern we’re singing the mysteries of heaven. More times than not, the interpretation will come after it and now the song has the ability to edify others.

Let’s pray together…
