The Holy Spirit || Part 8 (The Day of Pentecost)
The Holy Spirit || Part 8, Day 3
The Day of Pentecost
John 14:15-29 NKJV
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?” Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me. “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I. “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.”
Acts 2:1-4 NKJV
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
THE SETTLING, THE SITTING.
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit came and settled/sat upon each of them. Beloved, this was one of the most monumental events in history. Up until this time the people of God had witnessed the Holy Spirit come upon people. He would come upon prophets, kings, judges, and priests. These people would have moments in which others could see the Holy Spirit come upon them.
People like Samson, that would receive supernatural strength when the Holy Spirit came upon him. People like Elijah, when the spirit came up on him, he outran a chariot and horses. People like David, when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, he killed 200 Philistines by himself. They had seen the Holy Spirit come upon specific people for big tasks. But they had never seen the Holy Spirit settle on people. Secondly, they had never seen Him settle on common people.
On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit did not come just to accomplish a task and then leave. On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to tabernacle, to dwell, within people. On this day, He did not just come to dwell in people with prestigious titles. On this day, He came and settled upon everyone in that upper room. And it didn’t matter if they were rich or poor. It did not matter what color of skin they had. It did not matter what their background was or what their calling was. On that day, He settled upon all of them in that upper room.
Joel 2:28-29 says, “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
This is how Peter and the other apostles knew that this prophecy was being fulfilled; they witnessed everyone in the room being filled with the Holy Ghost. And not only were they filled but He didn’t go anywhere. The next day they woke up He was there. The next week He was still there. Peter and John are on their way to prayer, and He is there healing the lame man. They are called into the council to answer for their preaching and He’s there giving them boldness.
Preacher what are you saying? I’m telling you that when you are filled with the Spirit of God He doesn’t go anywhere. He’s wanting to use you today just like He did when you were filled 5 years ago. He’s wanting to speak to you today just like He did 6 months ago when you were filled. He’s wanting to empower you today just like He did years ago when you were filled.
He has settled upon the people of God. This is what makes you a peculiar people. This is what makes you a people who carry the treasure of heaven within you. This is what it means for the kingdom of God to dwell in you. Romans 14:17 says, “The kingdom of God is not eating or drinking, but it is peace, righteousness, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
Let’s pray together...
